Day 89 Journal

Portland

Well, as usual, it was still baking hot today.

I started the morning with a short ferry ride on the Canby Ferry and then kicked off the walk on the other side of the river, destination: Portland.

The early part of the walk was along some winding country roads, through small towns. I was also fortunate enough to pass through the town of Wankers Corner! Despite the name, I couldn't find any Chelsea fans??

Eventually I made it to Portland, Oregon's largest city with a metropolitan population of 2 million people. This is a beautiful city, with numerous waterways and exciting bridges making for a pretty walk for much of the day. It is known to have a climate not unlike that of the UK so the cloudless sky and bright sunshine must be a rare treat!

It was a nice change to walk through urban areas again after so many weeks through more sparse regions. The style of walking is different, being mostly on sidewalks and with frequent stops to wait for traffic.

I finished the day hot and tired with 28 miles logged.

After 'work' we went to see Vitaly Paley, the owner of the award winning Paley's Place Bistro here in Portland. He has recently launched a line of organic energy bars - Paley Bars - and, having been connected by my friend and earlier co-walker Nick, kindly offered to donate some bars for me to try. More news on this as I eat my way through Washington!

Back on the road tomorrow. Those days are counting down.

Take care
N
